Internet Set-up

The following instructions describe how to set-up Windows 98 and ME:

For Windows XP set-up:

Step 1: Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed
  • Press the start button, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  • Select the Windows Setup tab, from the tabs at the top of the page, then make sure the Communications option is checked inside the Component window. If it is not checked, check it by clicking once, this will check it as well as highlight it, then click on Details towards the lower right part of the page. Make sure that the Dial-up Networking option is selected, by clicking on it once, it will be in the Component window. If it is, go on to step 2.
  • If it isn't, select it and click OK. Windows 98 and ME will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy!
  • Now that Dial-up Networking is installed, you can proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Verify that the Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed
  • Press the start button, select Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Network icon. You'll see a dialog box. Make sure the Configuration tab is selected. Both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP should be present, then you're ready to proceed to step 3.
  • To add the Dial-Up Adapter, hit the Add button, double-click Adapter, then scroll down the list until you can select Microsoft. Choose the Dial-Up Adapter and hit OK.
  • If you need to install TCP/IP, hit the Add button, double-click Protocol, then select Microsoft, then TCP/IP, and hit OK.
  • Now your Network dialog box should contain both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Select the adapter, click Properties, Bindings, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked. You're now ready to proceed to step 3.

Step 3: Configure your TCP/IP Protocol for Dynamic IP Addressing
  • Now that the driver is installed, you need to configure it so it will work with Windows 98,ME and XP. Go to the Control Panel and double-click the Network icon. You should get a dialog box like this.
  • Click on the TCP/IP protocol and press the Properties button. You should get the TCP/IP Properties box. (See below)
  • There are up to six sections in this dialog box depending on which version of Windows you are using. We'll deal with them in order. In each case, you can click on the section title to get a picture of the dialog box with the correct options selected.
  • IP Address
  • Select the Obtain an IP address automatically option.
  • WINS Configuration
  • Select the Disable WINS Resolution option.
  • Bindings
  • By default, the Client for Microsoft Networks option is checked. Leave it alone.
  • Advanced
  • No changes needed are from the default.

Step 4: Set up the Connection Icon
  • Open up My Computer from the desktop and double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon. Double-click the Make New Connection icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard. The first dialog box looks like this.
  • Type in "Memory Lane", or whatever you want to call the icon you're about to create to connect you to us(the title won't affect the type of connection). Your modem (which should have been configured when you installed Windows 95,98,ME) should be shown in the Select a modem:
  • Don't worry about the Connection section, the defaults should be fine.
  • Click the Next > button in the Make New Connection wizard. Enter Memory Lane's access number. This is 528-6488.
  • Press the Finish button and your icon will be created.

Step 5: Setting the Dial-Up Properties
  • Select your newly-created connection icon, press the right mouse button and choose Properties... You should get a dialog box named whatever name you gave your icon.
  • Press the Server Type... button. You'll get the Server Types dialog box. In the Type of Dial-Up Server section, press the down arrow to drop down the list box. Since you're planning to use PPP, choose that server type in the list box.
  • Under "Advanced Options"
    "Log on to network" is not checked.
    "Enable Software Compression" is checked.
    "Encrypted password" is also not checked.
  • Under "Allowed Network Protocols"
    "NetBEUI" is not Checked.
    "IPX/SPX Compatible" is not checked.
    "TCP/IP" is checked.
    Click on the "TCP/IP Settings" button.
  • Under "TCP/IP settings"
    "Server Assigned IP address" is checked.
    For Windows 98 & Windows ME: "Server assigned name server addresses" is checked.
    For Windows XP: "Obtain DNS Server Addresses Automatically" is checked.
    There should be nothing in "Primary WINS" or "Secondary WINS".
    "Use IP Header Compression" should be checked.
    "Use Default Gateway on Remote network" should be checked.
    Click OK.
    Click OK again.
  • Hit the OK button in the remaining dialog box, and you're ready to dial!

Windows XP Set-up
  • Press the start button, select Control Panel. Double-click the Network Connections and double-click on Create New Connection.
  • Click Next, select Connect to the Internet; click Next.
  • Select Setup my Internet connection manually and click Next.
  • Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
  • Type DC Access in the ISP Name text box. Click Next.
  • Enter a DC Access dial in number local to you in the Phone Number box. Click Next.
  • Type your Internet ID in the Username box and type your password in both the Password and Confirm Password boxes and click Next.
  • Click Finish to complete the setup wizard.

Windows XP Dialing In
  • Click on the Start button.
  • Select Connect To.
  • Click on DC Access Connection
  • Click on the Dial button to connect.

Windows XP Hanging Up
  • When you are done with your internet session and want to hang up the modem, you need to open the DC Access Connection Status window. You can do this by looking in the Windows XP taskbar next to the clock. You should see the Connection Status icon (Two computer screens). Double-click on this icon.
  • The DC Access Connection Status will appear. To hang up, click the Disconnect button. This will end your internet session.
  • Click Close.
