SALES - HOMEHow To BuyConsider what it’s used for – Different applications require different levels of computing hardware or specifications. The latest 3D games or graphics software require you to have a much higher performing computer than an email program and internet browser. In order to get the most “bang for your buck”, make sure the specifications of the computer are appropriate for what you want to do. Machines that deal with multimedia (photos, music, video) will need a fair amount of RAM, and digital video takes up lots of Hard Drive space. Gamers will require a dedicated 3D accelerator (video card) to run new games properly. On the other hand, just about any new computer will surf the internet and run a word processor just fine. Desktop or Notebook? – Desktop computers are great for most home computing, but many people, like students and mobile professionals, can benefit from the mobility of a laptop computer. Don’t be afraid to spend a little more on a laptop if you think you can use the portability! You will really appreciate it if you use it. Notebooks have their own unique things to consider, however, such as battery life, and level of ruggedness. CRT or LCD? – Do you want a traditional picture tube display or a flat panel LCD? Both have benefits to consider. CRT (picture tube) technology is long proven, and generally can provide better colour accuracy for graphics applications and faster response for avid gamers. LCDs (flat panels) take up less valuable desk space, are easier to view for longer periods of time without eye strain, typically have no glare, and eat up less electricity. Many people prefer the image produced by an LCD for standard computing as well. They do cost more, however. Keyboard & Mouse – Don’t overlook this, whatever you do! Many people think the cheapest keyboard and mouse will do, but heavy computer users know that these items are how you interact with the computer, and can drastically alter your comfort level while computing. Do your wrists a favour, and get a quality keyboard and mouse. WARRANTY & SERVICE – I had to bold type this topic. Think of the standard warranty as how long the manufacturer expects the device to last. It’s a very important consideration in a world where a 1 Year or even 90 day warranty is becoming the norm. Also consider what happens when you need warranty service. Many warranties now are “return to factory” warranties, and require shipping to a far off factory and a 2 – 4 week turn-around. If fast service is important, make sure it’s serviceable locally. Ask Questions! – Don’t be afraid of using your salesman as a resource. If you aren’t sure about something, please ask. A famous quote I heard once was that the stupidest questions are the ones that never got asked. Have Fun – Many people get stressed out and frustrated because they aren’t familiar with the inner workings of computer technology, and are afraid of making incorrect decisions. Find a salesperson you feel you can trust, get some solid advice from a computer expert you might know of who is a neutral party, and treat the whole experience as a learning process! |
