WEB DEVELOPMENTHints & TricksConsidering getting a web site? There are a few things that you can consider before you approach a designer to cut down your costs and generally make creating your website a little easier. Content...content...contentContent is the most important part of your web site. If you don't have any content on your web site, you are going to have a lot of trouble designing the site or getting anyone to come and look at it once it is finished. Having an idea of what you would like to include in your web site (the more detailed the better), makes it much easier for the web page designer to create a web site that suits your needs. Also, know your target audience and the purpose of your web site; whether it is to sell a product or simply to entertain. Organize your contentLong pages of text will usually not be read by internet users, unless they are intensely interested in what you have to say. Try to make your information skimming-friendly through organization. Zoom in theory - start with high level topics, break them into groups, and then into subgroups. Use headings to catch attention and try to break up the page content into manageable blocks using bulleted lists, images or diagrams, and dividers. Advertise your siteIt takes time for a web site to show up on the popular search engines. If you are using your site as a way to attract more customers, or to promote a product, you should consider advertising your web presence. This can be as simple as remembering to include your site's URL at the bottom of your emails, or on your business card. Check and answer your emailIf you supply an email address for customers to get in touch with you, make sure that you check and answer your email regularly. An email address is just as important as the phone in your office. An unanswered call, or one that is simply not returned fast enough, could easily result in a lost customer. |
