Welcome to the Homepage of the Medicine Hat & Area Safe Community Coalition!

The Medicine Hat & Area Safe Community Coalition (SCC) has been coordinating safety programs in the community since 1995. The coalition developed as the result of businesses, agencies and service groups coming together with the vision of making our area one of the safest in which to live, learn, work and play.

The Safe Community Coalition cooperates with 60 local organizations to realize various collaborative injury prevention programs. Some projects currently being implemented by the SCC are:

Community Injury Prevention Project: Young adults coordinating safety resources throughout southeastern Alberta as part of a Youth Service Canada project.

Youth Recreation Safety: In-line skating safety, toboggan safety training and helmet loans and focus groups as a tool for youth safety solutions

Partners in Injury Reduction: Workplace Safety for small businesses

Steady as You Go: Fall Prevention for Seniors: Peer facilitated workshops, workbooks and videos, community hazard assessments

Dynamic Data: Research of injury issues and analysis of community needs and capacities. Dissemination of formal research reports.

Heartbeat 2000: Mass First Aid and CPR Training with the goal of training 2000 people in the year 2000.

"Safe Communities: Let's Make it Happen" Conference: This national conference will take place November 4th and 5th at the Medicine Hat Lodge. Guest speakers will include representatives from the World Health Organization in Sweden and the Centre for Disease Control in Atlanta as well as the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research.

The conference is being planned by the Safe Community Coalition, the Alberta Centre for Injury Control and Research and the national Safe Communities Foundation. For more details or to receive registration materials, contact Lucielle Fewer at (403) 527-6386.
