Steady as You Go

Fall Prevention Workshops for Seniors

Canadian statistics show that 30% of independently living older adults fall at least once per year. In our region, 455 seniors were seen in a hospital for fall-induced injuries in one year. However, most falls have causes that can be prevented.

Steady as You Go is a fall prevention workshop designed to educate seniors about their risk for falling and to reduce this risk through awareness and fitness.

Over 125 seniors have taken the Steady as You Go workshop so far, and more workshops are planned for this autumn.

Participants in Steady as You Go workshops:

Learn to identify community hazards and activities that put them at risk of falling

Raise their awareness of how medications, eyesight, fitness, footwear, footcare, and other factors can affect risk of falling

Practice exercises to improve leg strength and balance.

Receive a client handbook and a copy of the video "Fitness for Preventing Falls"

Seniors may request Steady as You Go materials and do the program AT HOME, or attend a FREE GROUP WORKSHOP. The workshops are led by specially trained seniors.

If you would like to participate in a Steady as You Go workshop or do the program by yourself at home, contact the Medicine Hat & Area Safe Community Coalition at (403) 529-8363.

Workshops are being planned for this autumn.
